Comprehensive history
National History Museum: Housed in a Former Communist Leader's Residence
The National History Museum occupies the former residence of Todor Zhivkov, Bulgaria's communist-era leader, in the Boyana Quarter, the same area as the UNESCO-listed Boyana Church. Its collection runs to more than 650,000 items, comprehensive enough to reward a visitor genuinely interested in Bulgarian history rather than a quick stop.
Opening hours run 09:00 to 17:30 from November to March and 09:00 to 18:00 from April to October, with closures on 1 January, Easter Sunday, and 24 to 25 December. Admission is still commonly quoted in the pre-euro Bulgarian lev, so treat the exact euro price as worth confirming before you go rather than fixed.

Ancient history
National Archaeological Museum: Artefacts Inside a Former Mosque
The National Archaeological Museum occupies Sofia's largest and oldest former Ottoman mosque, the Koca Mahmut Pasha Camii, built between 1451 and 1494. The building itself later served as a National Library before becoming a museum in 1905, which makes the building's own history as much a draw as the artefacts inside it.

National Gallery at Kvadrat 500: Right Behind the Cathedral
The National Gallery's Kvadrat 500 building reopened in 2015 with 28 halls holding more than 1,700 works, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. It sits directly behind Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a genuinely strong itinerary pairing since visiting one costs no extra travel to reach the other.
