Sightseeing deep dive

Boyana Church

Real hours and prices, the actual visitor-capacity limit, and how this visit differs from a full-day trip.

Boyana Church shows up on both the sightseeing guide and the day-trips guide, but neither covers what an actual visit requires.

The real constraint isn't getting there, it's a hard visitor-capacity limit inside the church itself.

Get the current hours, prices, and capacity limit straight first, then use the access details below to fit it into your day.

Trip shape
Half day or less

A genuinely different shape from a full-day trip like Rila Monastery.

Real capacity limit
Max 9 visitors at once

A hard constraint inside the church, not a general crowding caution.

Access
Bus 64, direct

From Vitosha Metro Station, roughly every 15-20 minutes.

Visiting details

Real Hours, Prices, and the 9-Visitor Limit

Current hours are 09:00-17:30 (last entry 17:20) from October 1 to March 31, and 09:30-18:00 (last entry 17:50) from April 1 to September 30. Tickets are priced in EUR: 10 EUR individual, 3 EUR student, with group rates around 7 EUR for groups of 10 or more and 2 EUR for student groups. Several third-party sites still show stale BGN prices from before the euro adoption; don't use those.

The real constraint is capacity: a maximum of 9 visitors are allowed inside the church at the same time, with roughly 10 minutes to see the medieval fresco sections. That's a hard limit, not a general crowding caution.

One thing worth flagging honestly: a non-official source described narrow timed-entry slots distinct from the official site's continuous hours. Confirm the exact entry structure when you book rather than assuming either version.

Access and shape

A Half-Day Trip, Not a Full Day

Boyana Church is roughly 8 km from central Sofia. Bus 64, reachable from Vitosha Metro Station at the end of Line M2, runs directly to the church roughly every 15-20 minutes from about 08:00 to 17:30, with a journey of around 20 minutes. Trolleybus 2 or 8, or bus 204 with a transfer to bus 64, are alternative routes, and a taxi takes around 25 minutes.

Between the short distance, direct bus access, and the brief in-church visit time the capacity limit enforces, this is genuinely a half-day-or-less trip, not a full-day commitment like Rila Monastery. It pairs naturally with Vitosha Mountain, which sits right next to it, as a same-outing option.

Heritage

Heritage Status

UNESCO inscribed Boyana Church as a World Heritage Site in 1979, recognising its medieval frescoes and historic buildings on the outskirts of Sofia.

What's Worth Confirming Yourself

Hours, prices, the exact entry structure, and bus timing are all worth confirming yourself before you rely on them.

This guide is built from research, not firsthand visits. Hello Sofia hasn't personally visited the church, booked entry, or ridden the bus, so treat it as a starting point rather than a review.
